What do homeowners ask about Automotive tint?
What is the legal window tint in California?
California Vehicle Code section 26708 sets minimum VLT (visible light transmission) requirements by window position. Front side windows must allow 70 percent VLT. Rear side windows and the rear window have no VLT minimum for non-commercial passenger vehicles. The windshield can have a tinted strip in the AS-1 zone above the manufacturer line. Your installer confirms legal compliance for your specific vehicle before cutting.
How long does automotive tinting take?
A full car tint install typically takes 2-4 hours depending on the vehicle and the number of windows. The film needs 2-4 days of cure time after installation before you roll the windows down, to allow the adhesive to bond fully to the glass. In San Diego heat, cure times can be on the shorter end compared to cooler climates.
Will ceramic tint interfere with my GPS, phone signal, or EZ Pass?
No. Ceramic film uses non-metallic nano-ceramic particles that do not block radio frequency signals. Standard metallic or dyed metalized films can interfere with GPS and cell reception, which is why ceramic is the recommended upgrade for any driver who uses navigation or relies on cell signal in the vehicle. Ceramic does not affect toll transponder readers either.
How dark can I legally tint my car windows in San Diego?
Front side windows are limited to 70 percent VLT minimum, meaning the film must be very light. Rear side windows and the back glass have no VLT minimum for passenger vehicles, so you can go as dark as 5 percent (limo tint) on those windows. The windshield tint strip is limited to the AS-1 line. Your installer knows these rules and will not cut non-compliant film for California-registered vehicles.
Is there a warranty on automotive window film?
Quality automotive film from established manufacturers carries a warranty against bubbling, peeling, color change, and adhesion failure. Ceramic films typically carry a longer warranty than dyed or hybrid films. The warranty applies to the film itself; installation defects are covered by the installer. Your installer provides the warranty documentation at pickup.
