Security film

Security and safety window film across San Diego County

Standard residential and commercial glass breaks into dangerous shards on impact. Security window film is a thick polyester layer applied to the interior surface that holds broken glass together when a window or door is struck, significantly slowing a forced entry attempt and reducing injury risk from accidental breakage. We connect San Diego homeowners and business owners with vetted, insured installers who assess your vulnerability points and recommend the right film thickness and anchoring system for your situation.

What's included in this service?

  • Match you with a vetted, insured installer who assesses your ground-floor windows, sliding glass doors, and entry points for security film coverage
  • Recommend the appropriate film thickness for your application: 4-mil for basic safety film, 7-8 mil for security film, and 12-14 mil for blast-resistant applications on commercial buildings
  • Install with a perimeter anchor system on high-risk windows so the film stays attached to the frame even when the glass breaks, rather than bowing inward
  • Confirm that the film selected also provides UV and heat rejection so the security upgrade doubles as a comfort upgrade
  • Coordinate with your insurance carrier if documentation of the installation is needed for a coverage discount
  • Provide a written scope and manufacturer warranty before the job starts

When do you need this service?

  • Ground-floor windows or sliding glass doors on your home or business are a visible entry point that you want to make more resistant to forced entry
  • Children or elderly family members use a space with large glass panels near common areas, and you are concerned about injury from accidental breakage
  • You have had a vehicle break-in, business burglary, or smash-and-grab attempt in your area and want to slow a repeat
  • Your East County or mountain community home is in a wildfire zone where window glass integrity during a fire event is a concern
  • A retail business has merchandise near street-facing glass and you want to reduce the smash-and-grab risk without a full physical barrier

What do homeowners ask about Security film?

Does security window film make glass unbreakable?

No. Security film does not prevent glass from breaking. What it does is hold the broken pieces together so the window does not immediately become an open entry point or a source of flying shards. A determined intruder can break through film-protected glass with enough time and force, but the delay it creates is significant: a 10-30 second delay is often enough for an alarm to trigger and an intruder to abandon the attempt.

What is the difference between safety film and security film?

Safety film (typically 4-mil) is designed to hold broken glass together to prevent injury from accidental breakage, such as a child running into a glass door. Security film (7-14 mil) is thicker and more resistant to penetration from deliberate impact. Both provide UV and some heat rejection. The right thickness depends on whether your primary concern is accidental safety or deliberate forced entry.

Does security film need to be anchored to the frame?

For maximum effectiveness against forced entry, yes. An unanchored film will hold the glass together, but the entire glass panel can be pushed inward when struck. A perimeter anchor system attaches the film to the window frame so the glass and film unit stays in place under impact. The anchor system adds cost but is the correct specification for security-focused applications.

Is security film visible from outside?

Most security film is optically clear or very lightly tinted, meaning it is not visible from outside the building. Some installers offer security film in a solar-tinted version that also provides heat and glare control. The exterior appearance of a window with security film is essentially the same as without it, which is often preferred for residential and retail applications where you do not want to advertise that the windows are reinforced.

Can security film be applied to tempered glass?

Yes. Security film can be applied to tempered glass, laminated glass, and standard annealed glass. Tempered glass already shatters into small fragments rather than sharp shards, but security film holds those fragments together so the opening remains blocked. For sliding glass doors and other tempered glass panels, security film is a practical upgrade that addresses the breach-point vulnerability without replacing the glass.
