Cost and quotes
How much does window tinting cost in San Diego?
Automotive tinting runs $150-$600 depending on film type and vehicle size. Residential home projects run $300-$2,500 depending on square footage and film. Commercial projects vary by square footage and film spec. The on-site estimate confirms the written price.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. An installer visits your home, business, or reviews your vehicle, assesses your windows and goals, walks you through film options, and hands you a written quote with no obligation and no trip fee for your zip.
What drives the price up on a window tinting project?
Film type is the biggest cost driver. Ceramic film costs more than standard dyed or hybrid film but performs better in San Diego heat. Square footage, number of windows, and window accessibility affect residential and commercial pricing. Tint removal before reapplication adds prep cost. Your installer confirms all costs at the on-site estimate.
Film types and performance
What is the difference between ceramic and standard window film?
Standard dyed or hybrid film blocks some heat and UV at a lower cost. Ceramic film uses nano-ceramic particles to block significantly more heat and UV without adding much visible darkness. Ceramic does not interfere with GPS or cell signals, which standard metalized film can. For San Diego heat, ceramic is worth the upgrade on south- and west-facing windows.
How much heat does window film actually block?
Quality heat rejection film can block 40-80 percent of solar heat gain through glass depending on the film type and shade. Ceramic films at the high end block more heat at lighter shades. Your installer reviews heat rejection data for specific film options at the estimate.
Does window film stop UV fading on furniture and floors?
Quality window film blocks up to 99 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays, which are the main cause of fading in floors, furniture, and artwork. Even lighter clear UV films significantly reduce fading without changing the appearance of your windows.
Automotive tinting and California law
What is the legal window tint limit in California?
California requires front side windows to allow at least 70 percent VLT (visible light transmission). Rear side windows and the rear window have no minimum VLT for non-commercial passenger vehicles. The windshield can have a tinted strip above the AS-1 line. Your installer confirms compliance for your specific vehicle.
How long does automotive window tinting take?
A full car tinting install typically takes two to four hours. A single window replacement or rear window takes less time. Your installer sets the exact timeline based on your vehicle.
How long before I can roll down my windows after tinting?
Most installers recommend waiting two to four days before rolling windows down to allow the film adhesive to cure fully. In San Diego sun and heat, cure times can be shorter than in cooler climates. Your installer confirms the cure recommendation at pickup.

Are the window-film installers insured?
The installers we match carry general liability insurance, and we confirm coverage before work starts. Window film installation does not require a CSLB contractor license in California.
