UV film

UV protection window film across San Diego County

San Diego's 266 sunny days a year are hard on anything near a window. Standard glass blocks UV-B but transmits most UV-A, which is the wavelength that fades wood floors, bleaches upholstered furniture, and degrades artwork over time. UV protection window film blocks up to 99 percent of both UV-A and UV-B with minimal impact on visible light transmission, which means your rooms stay bright while the surfaces and furnishings inside are protected. We connect San Diego homeowners and business owners with vetted, insured installers who can apply UV film at any shade from virtually clear to moderately tinted.

What's included in this service?

  • Match you with a vetted, insured installer who reviews your window orientation, sun exposure, and the surfaces or items you most want to protect
  • Recommend the appropriate UV film: optically clear UV-only film for spaces where appearance change is not acceptable, or light solar film that combines UV protection with some heat and glare control
  • Apply film to the interior surface of the glass without altering the window frame or the glass itself
  • Provide UV rejection data for the specific film selected so you have documentation of the protection level
  • Install with full adhesion and a clean edge so the film is not visible at normal viewing distances
  • Confirm manufacturer warranty coverage for the film life

When do you need this service?

  • Hardwood floors, area rugs, or wood trim near windows are visibly fading, bleaching, or showing UV damage
  • Upholstered furniture, throw pillows, or draperies near a south- or west-facing window are losing color faster than the rest of the room
  • You have artwork, photographs, or collectibles displayed near windows that are at risk from long-term UV exposure
  • You want UV protection without changing the appearance of the window from inside or outside, and a visible tint is not acceptable
  • A healthcare or childcare facility has regulations or insurance requirements about UV exposure for patients or children near windows

What do homeowners ask about UV film?

Does UV window film change how the window looks?

Clear UV-only film is optically transparent and does not visibly change the appearance of the glass from inside or outside. Light solar UV films in the 60-80 percent VLT range have a very slight tint that is not noticeable in most conditions. If you want UV protection without any visible change to the window, ask your installer specifically for an optically clear UV film. Your installer shows you the film on a sample before applying.

What percentage of UV does window film block?

Quality UV protection film blocks up to 99 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation. Even standard residential solar film typically blocks 98-99 percent of UV. The difference between film types is not in UV blocking, which is high across the board for quality products, but in heat rejection and visible light transmission. UV blocking is one area where even an entry-level solar film provides meaningful protection.

Will UV film stop my floors from fading completely?

Film eliminates most UV-driven fading, which is the primary cause of color loss in flooring, fabric, and artwork. Some fading from visible light and heat can still occur over time even with UV film installed, but the rate is dramatically slower. If your floors or furniture have already faded, the film stops further damage from UV; it does not reverse existing discoloration.

Can UV film be applied to skylights?

Yes. UV film is commonly applied to skylights, which let in intense overhead sun that accelerates fading on surfaces below. The installation on a skylight requires careful access and cutting, and some skylight shapes require more material and labor than a standard vertical window. Your installer assesses the skylight type and access at the on-site visit before quoting.

Does UV film also help with heat?

Clear UV-only film provides minimal heat rejection because most solar heat enters through the infrared spectrum, not the UV spectrum. If heat gain is also a concern, your installer will recommend a light solar film that combines UV protection with infrared heat rejection. For many San Diego homeowners, the right choice is a light solar film at 60-70 percent VLT that handles both UV and heat rather than a UV-only product.
